Aluminium Amalgam
This is prepared by adding fine aluminium filings to a 1/2% solution of mercuric chloride for two or three minutes, and afterwards washing the product with alcohol or spirits. The resulting amalgam decomposes water at ordinary temperatures, liberating a steady stream of hydrogen gas.
