Coinage Metals
These comprise of copper, silver and gold, and, to a certain extent, nickel. Platinum is also, sometimes used for coinage purposes.
These metals (and / or their special alloys) are employed for coinage purposes because they are sufficiently plastic under pressure to be "struck" with dies, they are tough enough and not easily broken, they do not readily corrode in acid or water, and because, if necessary, they can be hardened by admixture with other metals to meet the hard wear of ordinary coinage.
