Gold Amalgam
Standard "saturated" amalgam is: gold 2 parts, mercury 1 part. This has the consistency of wax. Gold readily forms amalgams. A piece of gold rubbed over with mercury is at once penetrated by the latter and becomes exceedingly brittle. Gold leaf suspended in the fumes of warm mercury rapidly becomes amalgamated. The pasty amalgam containing 1 part gold, 8 - 9 parts of mercury forms the basis of the old methods of gilding.
