Grey Tin
When tin is cooled to a low temperature, it crumbles into a powder known as "grey tin." Herein lies the cause of the so-called "tin pest" or "tin diseases" whereby tin objects, such as organ pipes, sometimes crumble away during cold winter.
"Grey tin" appears to be a definite variety of tin which is formed slowly at temperatures below 18 deg C., and it is an extraordinary fact that if a piece of sound "white" tin be places in contact with a piece of tin suffering from the "diseases" or "pest" it will become infected.
