High Speed Tool Steels
These, which are also known as "self-hardening steels," comprise carefully-made steels alloyed with tungsten (12 - 22%), chromium (2 - 6%), vanadium (.3 - .5%), and / or other hardening metals. These steels do not soften even at red heat. Hence tools made from them retain their cutting edges at elevated temperatures and can be ran at far higher speeds than can tools made from ordinary carbon steels.
