Wrought Iron
This is the purest commercial form of iron. It is produced by a process of burning out the various non-metallic impurities in pig or cast iron. Wrought iron softens at 1000 deg C. and melts completely at 1550 deg C. (Cast or pig iron melts at 1200 deg C) It is malleable and ductile and fibrous in structure, whilst pig iron or cast iron is brittle and crystalline in structure. Wrought iron can readily be rolled and also drawn into wire. Nowadays, much of its former uses have given place to steel, which is stronger. It is also known as "Malleable Iron."
